Mind-blowing Mindset Stats
Apr 07, 2021Did you know that what someone else tells you (external dialogue) is only 1/10th as powerful as what you tell yourself (inner dialogue)?
So if the people in your life tell you you're beautiful but you still tend to think negatively about your body/skin/weight/appearance that means that you hold the power to 10X your satisfaction and self-love just by adjusting your inner dialogue!
Did you know that what you say out loud is 10x more powerful than what you say in your head?!
So you could take the previous example and just by replacing your negative self-talk with positive statements about yourself/your body/your life out loud you could then 100X your likelihood of feeling happy in your own skin!
Did you know that a negative thought is 7X more powerful than a positive one?
EEEK! And if it's said out loud that's another 10X! That means your negative comment about your finances/ job/body/ life is now 70X stronger than any of your cute little positive thoughts. Shit!
A negative comment could be anything from a basic complaint to saying something like, "that'll never happen" "I don't have the money" "I don't know how" or "I'm such a mess." We ALL can relate to these thoughts/complaints and for most of us they can be a daily occurrence...
So, knowing these stats how can we start to take charge of our mindset and optimize our daily thoughts??
Trevor Moawad, sports psychologist and results-driven mindset expert, says that sometimes it's more about what you DON'T do than what you DO do. Listen in to this Short Story Long podcast episode where host, ‘Drama’ Pfaff, interviews Trevor about his best mindset tips and the science behind the mindset work he’s done with professional athletes and football programs like FSU and Alabama.
It's hard to just turn off your inner voice or decide that from this day forward you're only going to think and say positive things 24/7. Pretty unrealistic. So the best way to start is not by trying to tackle everything at once but rather by focusing on 'trimming the fat' first or getting rid of the bad stuff.
So, here are some things that you can make a conscious effort NOT to do today (or any day).
To-Don'ts:
-
Don't voice negative thoughts
-
Don't complain about trivial things
-
Don't compare yourself to others
-
Don't use a complaint as a conversation starter i.e. "The weather was such shit this weekend, wasn't it?"
-
Don't watch/read the news (more than 90% of news is negative)
-
Don't consume depressing content - horror films, stories/books/media surrounding tragedy/death/loss/poverty
-
Don't speak negatively/talk badly about others
-
Don't use self-deprecating humour "I look like a homeless person lol."
This is just a general guide of how to become more aware of the negativity that is likely seeping into your mindset each day. But even if you follow the entire ‘To-Don't List’ negative thoughts will still come up from time to time, maybe even constantly in the beginning. You'll inevitably catch yourself complaining or comparing - it's natural. Don't freak out...
When that happens you can simply try to think of a positive thought or something you're grateful for in order to counterbalance the negativity (or say it out loud to outweigh it completely - 10X that sucker!!)
Mindset is similar to fitness in that it takes time, effort, and consistency to see results, so be patient. Start by simply observing your thoughts and noticing where/when the negativity tends to come up for you and slowly but surely eliminating it from your daily dialogue. Consistency over perfection!
